Highlights of Spring/Summer 2017
"Yet those who wait for the LORD Will gain new strength; They will mount up with wings like eagles, They will run and not get tired, They will walk and not become weary." Isaiah 40:31 Thanking the Lord for a season of new opportunities that often allow for a renewing of vision and a refreshing of the Spirit that strengthens our hearts that Isaiah spoke of. In this newsletter, you will see a few events that have impacted the Deaf Community inside and outside the walls of the church. There are facets of culture and community that continue to change. Advancing the Kingdom of God with its transitions is through a total dependence on the power and the leading of the Holy Spirit!
WALK-A-THON WITH A PURPOSE
On June 17, 2017, a few of us participated in a walk-a-thon raising funds for an apartment housing project specifically for Deaf Senior Citizens. This was held at Christ Church in Rockaway. The project has been underway for several years to create a vibrant community for the deaf that would lessen the isolation and loneliness that occurs because of language barriers.
SIGN LANGUAGE CLASS The American Sign Language class led by Gail and Susana was a HUGE success! More than 20 people attended over the course of 8 weeks. They learned the alphabet, numbers and conversational signs. On the last day of class they were able to interact with members of the deaf bible study class and perform the song "Every Praise" in ASL. They hope to start again in the Fall!
Krystal Rodriquez and Alicia Rivera are both Deaf Culture Studies Major's at the University of Valley Forge. Krystal is a part of Calvary Temple, Wayne, NJ and Alicia is a part of Hope Center Tabernacle in Jersey City, NJ. Both are currently doing their internships this summer, which requires them to serve at a Deaf Church for 8-10 weeks. Currently Alicia is serving at Austin Spirit of Life Deaf Church in Austin, TX and Krystal is currently serving at Evangel Church in Scotch Plains, NJ along side of me. I am blessed to see these young women in ministry and look forward to seeing God use them in amazing ways.
DID YOU KNOW? Sign language is NOT international. In fact, several countries have several signed languages. Sign language words and dialects vary from state to state as well, even in the US.
PRAYER POINTS * Life transformation in the Deaf Community through salvation and discipleship. * Upcoming National Deaf Fellowship Conference at University of Valley Forge in June 2018.
